BRIEF BIO
Mitchell Cheng is a Taiwanese-American pianist, composer, and educator based in New York City. He is first and foremost an improviser, and cherishes the surprise and wonder that can occur from a spontaneous musical idea that is expressed directly, in real time. His songs have a strong narrative arc and pay homage to the style of his mentors, Eric Doney and John Coates.
He has shared the stage with Dave Liebman, Phil Woods, Bill Goodwin, Zach Brock, Tony Garnier, to name a few. Mitchell holds three regular gigs at jazz venues in NYC where you can hear his trio play original music and straight ahead jazz.
Mitchell is an alumni of Manhattan School of Music. He is an avid educator and works to support arts education initiatives in NYC.
STudy
For me teaching music is not a side hustle. It is an art within itself. One of my parents was a public high school teacher, and my grandfather was a professor. With this lineage in mind, I bring attentiveness and thoughtfulness to each lesson I teach. My goal is to help you make music a more permanent part of your life; whether that entails preparing for conservatory auditions or dusting off old piano books to start playing again- let’s go for it! You can book here or reach out via email.
